At Africans for Mental Health (AFMH), our mission is to break the stigma of mental illness in the African global community by equipping and empowering individuals with practical skills and resources to support each other.


Our training programs provide participants with confidence, compassion, and care to effectively respond to mental health and suicide concerns. Whether you're supporting loved ones, working in our schools, serving on the frontlines, or leading in your community, these skills can help you save lives, break the stigma of mental illness, and build safer, more supportive spaces for all.

Who can Take Our Trainings?

Our trainings are open to everyone 18 and older—no mental health background required. 

Spouses, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents, godparents, guardians, kinship caregivers, chosen family, friends, neighbors, and anyone providing emotional or physical care for a loved one

Online Adult Mental Health First Training (2024-2025)

Be A 3-Year Certified Adult Mental Health Aider | Maryland  - NEW CLASS ALERT!


This evidence-based training teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in adults. 


Our goal is to train 390 participants will receive a 3-year Mental Health First Aider certification upon completion.

 

Format:

  • 2 hours of self-paced/pre-work online learning.  We require at least 80 percent of the cohort to complete their prework for the training to proceed.  
  • 6 hours of live, instructor-led training over two days (3-hour sessions)
  •  Participants must have a working camera and microphone and are expected to remain on-camera for the entire course, except during scheduled breaks. 

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health issues
  • Ways to support adults in distress and connect them to appropriate resources
  • Strategies to build confidence in approaching difficult conversations with empathy and care

NOTE: At least 80% of the cohort must complete their prework for the training to proceed. Online QPR Suicide Prevention Training (2024-2025)

  

Be A QPR-Trained Gatekeeper | Maryland

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a nationally recognized suicide prevention training designed to teach individuals how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. 


By the end of the trainings, 455 participants will be certified as QPR Gatekeepers, equipped with the skills to potentially save a life.


Format:  Online 2-Hour, Instructor-Led, Interactive Training

Online Youth Mental Health First Training (2024-2025)

Be A 3-Year Certified Youth Mental Health Aider | Maryland

Mental Health First Aid® for Youth equips you with the skills to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth ages 12 to 18.  Upon completion, 40 participants receive a 3-year certification. 


Format:

  • 2 hours of self-paced/pre-work online learning.  We require at least 80 percent of the cohort to complete their prework for the training to proceed.  
  • 6 hours of live, instructor-led training over two days (3-hour sessions)
  • Participants must have a working camera and microphone and are expected to remain on-camera for the entire course, except during scheduled breaks.

North Texas Suicide Prevention Training 2025 (In-Person)

  

Be a QPR-Trained Gatekeeper

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a nationally recognized suicide prevention training that empowers individuals to:

 ☑️ Recognize the warning signs of suicide
☑️ Engage with someone in crisis and offer hope
☑️ Refer them to professional help and support

By the end of this training, 200 participants will be certified as QPR Gatekeepers, equipped with the skills to potentially save a life in North Texas.

🕘 Session Options: Choose Morning (10:00 AM – 12:30 PM CST) OR Afternoon (2:00 PM – 4:30 PM CST)
